Obtaining a FIDE rating is the dream of every aspiring chess player in India. It is your global passport, recognized by the International Chess Federation. But for a beginner, the process can seem daunting. In 2024, the path is clearer than ever, but it requires careful planning.
The first step is AICF Registration. Every player must register with the All India Chess Federation. This provides you with a unique player ID. Without this, you cannot participate in any state or national level tournaments. Once registered, you must look for 'FIDE Rated' tournaments. For beginners, we highly recommend 'Below 1600' category tournaments. These events ensure you are playing against people of a similar skill level, giving you a realistic chance to score points.
To get a rating, you need to play against at least 5 already-rated players within a specific period and score at least 0.5 points against them. This is where many fail—they play too many unrated players. Your strategy should be to enter 'Open' tournaments where the probability of facing rated opponents is higher.
Preparation is key. You shouldn't just show up. You need to be familiar with the FIDE Laws of Chess, specifically how to handle touch-move rules and clock management. Many Indian youngsters lose games not because of their moves, but because of technical errors or nervousness. At Evergreen, we simulate tournament conditions with digital clocks and notation sheets to ensure our students are 'Rating Ready.' Once you cross that 1000-point threshold, the real journey begins. It’s not just about the number; it’s about the discipline it took to get there.
